Capital Group

Capital Group, one of the world's largest asset managers, has secured a stake of more than 5% in Shinhan Financial Group (055550.KS), making it a major institutional shareholder. Market watchers said the move reflects a favorable assessment of the group's shareholder-value initiatives and improving earnings.
Capital Research and Management Company (CRMC), Capital Group's investment adviser, disclosed that it held 23,568,346 Shinhan Financial shares as of the 26th of last month, according to financial industry sources on the 2nd.
The filing lifted CRMC's stake in Shinhan Financial to 5.02%. The holding was reported as a simple investment.
Capital Group is a large U.S. asset manager that oversaw more than $3.6 trillion in assets as of the end of June. It is known as a long-term active investor that emphasizes durable growth, profitability and capital allocation. The firm previously held more than 5% of Shinhan Financial but later trimmed the position below that threshold.
Industry officials said the sustained push to raise corporate value under Shinhan Financial Group Chairman Jin Ok-dong likely contributed to Capital Group's decision to increase its holding. In April, Shinhan Financial unveiled its "Value-up 2.0" plan, setting key targets of a return on equity above 10%, a total shareholder return ratio above 50% and a common equity Tier 1 ratio above 13%. "We believe the assessment was positive on our efforts to enhance shareholder value through Value-up 2.0 and on the improvement in ROE driven by better earnings at group affiliates, led by non-banking units," a Shinhan Financial official said.
