The final vacuum vessel sector module of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), whose manufacturing HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180.KS) participated in, has been assembled.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said on the 23rd that it attended the "Korea-ITER Fusion Day" event held on the 22nd at the ITER construction site in Cadarache, southern France.
ITER is an international project in which seven member states, including Korea, the United States, the European Union (EU), China, Japan, Russia, and India, are jointly building the world's largest fusion experimental reactor in Cadarache, France.
About 150 people attended the event, including officials from the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), domestic companies and research institutions, and the ITER Organization. They shared the current status of ITER construction and Korea's major procurement achievements, and discussed international cooperation in the fusion field.
The event was arranged to commemorate the assembly of the final ITER vacuum vessel sector, manufactured by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, into a sector module by combining it with thermal shields and superconducting magnets. The thermal shield is a device that blocks the transfer of heat from the vacuum vessel to the superconducting magnets, which operate at cryogenic temperatures. The superconducting magnets create magnetic fields to confine the ultra-high-temperature plasma.
The sector module made by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been moved to the tokamak (a doughnut-shaped structure) pit for final assembly. It will be combined with the other eight sector modules to complete a vacuum vessel weighing about 5,000 tons.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries manufactured four of the nine total vacuum vessel sectors. After winning the order for two sectors allocated to Korea in 2010, it additionally secured two units allocated to the EU in 2016, delivering all of them in 2024.
The vacuum vessel is a core component of ITER that surrounds the ultra-high-temperature plasma exceeding 100 million degrees and maintains a high-vacuum environment. Each vacuum vessel sector is an ultra-large structure standing 11.3 meters high, 6.6 meters wide, and weighing about 400 tons, requiring high manufacturing precision so that each sector can be precisely joined. It must also meet French nuclear pressure vessel regulations, international nuclear technical standards, and the quality and safety requirements of the ITER Organization.
At the event, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries received a plaque of appreciation in recognition of its contribution to manufacturing the vacuum vessel sectors.
Won Kwang-sik, executive vice president of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, who delivered a speech on behalf of the participating companies, said, "The successful manufacturing and installation of the ITER vacuum vessel sectors is an important milestone demonstrating the technological competitiveness of Korea's industrial sector and the fruits of international cooperation." He added, "HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will continue to contribute to realizing sustainable energy for future generations based on its accumulated technology and experience."
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries carried out the structural design of the main device of the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR), completed in 2007, and has participated in building Korea's fusion research foundation by producing key facilities such as large ultra-high-vacuum vessels and cryogenic vessels.
