Hyundai to invest $15.5bn in Indian manufacturing, R&D
BENGALURU -- Hyundai Motor will invest $15.5 billion in India through 2032 to expand manufacturing, R&D and other areas…
不做 现代汽车印度公司(HYUNDAI.IN)

BENGALURU -- Hyundai Motor will invest $15.5 billion in India through 2032 to expand manufacturing, R&D and other areas, the South Korean automaker said Tuesday, as intensifying competition erodes its share in the world's third-largest car market.
Hyundai intends to increase manufacturing capacity, looking to boost exports to other emerging markets. Hyundai and group company Kia's factories in India have a combined annual capacity of 1.4 million units.
The company will funnel $700 million into research and development. Hyundai also will invest in local suppliers to strengthen its supply chain and back startups.
"India remains one of Hyundai Motor Group's most important and strategic markets globally," Chung Eui-sun, the group's executive chair, said in a statement. "The past 30 years have been defined by our commitment to India. This investment reaffirms our commitment to India for the next 30 years and beyond."
With India topping 4.7 million vehicle sales in the fiscal year ended March, the country has become crucial for global carmakers. India has largely kept Chinese carmakers at bay through strict foreign direct investment rules, though some of those restrictions were relaxed earlier this year.
Against that backdrop, carmakers ranging from Europe's Renault and Volkswagen Group to Japan's Honda Motor have recently declared India an important market and announced plans for new models over the next few years.
The fresh investment comes as Hyundai, which raised $3.3 billion in an initial public offering in India during 2024, has ceded ground to homegrown competitors Tata Motors and Mahindra Group.
Bold designs, frequent model updates and local sourcing helped Hyundai flourish in India, where American, European and Japanese carmakers have struggled. The company has been a market leader in introducing hatchbacks and sport utility vehicles, offering packages of features more attuned to local needs than those of its rivals.
But some competitors have caught up in recent years with feature-packed SUVs. Once India's second-largest carmaker, Hyundai has struggled to consistently hold that position. Its market share slipped to 11.75% in September, putting it fourth behind Maruti Suzuki, with 39.59%, as well as Mahindra with 13.42% and Tata Motors with 13.4%, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations reports.
