Daewon Pharmaceutical is moving into South Korea's health functional food market with a fermented pig placenta extract approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for helping to relieve fatigue.
Daewon Health, the company's health functional food brand, said on the 28th that it has launched "Fermented Placenta King," a health functional food for fatigue relief, and will offer it through home shopping channels.
The product's main ingredient is fermented pig placenta extract, marketed as PlaCell, an individually approved ingredient certified by the drug safety ministry as "may help relieve fatigue." Among individually approved ingredients derived from pig placenta, PlaCell is the only one in South Korea certified for fatigue relief functionality.
The fermented pig placenta extract is produced by fermenting and aging pig placenta for 100 days, and the related technology has been patented in four countries — South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. Each bottle contains 320 milligrams of the extract, equivalent to one day's intake.
The fatigue relief function was confirmed through a human trial. In an eight-week study of 84 men and women aged 30 to under 60 who regularly experience fatigue, Fatigue Severity Scale scores improved significantly compared with the control group. Significant changes also appeared in mRNA expression levels of IL-1β, an inflammatory cytokine associated with fatigue. The findings were published in Nutrients, an international SCIE-indexed journal.
The product comes in 20-gram liquid ampoules, each holding a single day's intake. It contains no sugar and includes L-leucine, L-arginine and taurine as secondary ingredients.
"We put an individually approved ingredient certified by the drug safety ministry into a liquid ampoule so that it can be taken easily," a Daewon Pharmaceutical official said. "Based on scientific evidence and consumer convenience, we will continue to introduce products that can help with everyday health management."
Fermented Placenta King will go on sale starting at 7:50 a.m. on the 30th on NS Home Shopping, followed by other home shopping channels.
