Samsung Heavy Industries (010140.KS) has signed an engineering contract with Mustered Corporation (M3), a U.S. data center developer, to build floating data centers (FDCs) in the United States. The contract marks the first commercialization project based on a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) the two companies signed in April, and the first case in which a Korean shipbuilder applies its FDC conceptual design to an actual project.
Samsung Heavy Industries and M3 recently held a signing ceremony and concluded a basic and detailed design contract for FDCs, according to industry sources on the 4th.
Under the contract, the two companies will jointly carry out the basic design, detailed engineering, and production design of FDCs to be deployed in major U.S. markets such as Texas. Each facility will provide 50 megawatts (MW) of capacity, and the companies plan to pursue a final engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract as well. Samsung Heavy Industries previously said it would achieve its FDC commercialization goal by the first half of 2028.
A key feature of the FDCs to be built is their eco-friendly design. Each facility adopts a "non-evaporative cooling method" that consumes no drinking water and discharges no effluent into surrounding waters. By excluding air-cooled chillers and fans, the main sources of noise at existing land-based data centers, the design minimizes noise generation while maintaining energy efficiency.
The introduction of the shipyard's onshore construction method is also expected to shorten the construction period. According to M3, site preparation work and the fabrication of data center structures proceed simultaneously, dramatically improving the speed of infrastructure supply compared with the land-based construction method.
"FDCs are a natural extension of the design, fabrication, and project execution capabilities that Samsung Heavy Industries has built over more than 50 years in the offshore construction field," said Samsung Heavy Industries Vice Chairman Choi Sung-an. "Together with M3, we will supply FDCs based on the strict quality and delivery certainty proven in our offshore business."
