Hanwha Asset Management is launching an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that holds high-growth memory chip companies and treasury bonds, seeking to reduce uncertainty while pursuing stable returns.
Hanwha Asset Management said on the 4th that it is introducing the "PLUS SK hynix SanDisk Bond Mix 50" ETF, which invests in SK hynix and SanDisk.
The product allocates 25% each to SK hynix and SanDisk, with the remaining 50% invested in nine treasury bonds. The structure simultaneously pursues the growth of memory chip companies driven by the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) and the stability of treasury bonds.
The two companies are considered "pure players" that generate most of their revenue from memory chips. The relatively small impact of their non-memory businesses means improvements in the memory market and earnings growth are more likely to be directly reflected in their stock prices, according to the company.
SK hynix (000660.KS) is the No. 1 company in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market and the No. 2 company in the global DRAM market. SanDisk is a U.S. storage device company focused on NAND flash, with strengths in supplying enterprise solid-state drives (eSSD).
The product reflects the outlook that the bottleneck in the AI industry could shift from graphics processing units (GPU) to memory and storage devices. While securing GPUs was the key challenge during the AI training phase, the importance of HBM and DRAM is growing as inference demand takes off. As AI agents spread, demand for NAND- and eSSD-based storage infrastructure that stores and retrieves large volumes of data is also expected to increase.
Half of the non-equity assets are composed of treasury bonds to lower stock price volatility. Under retirement pension supervisory regulations, the product is classified as a non-risk asset, allowing the entire accumulated amount to be invested in defined contribution (DC) and individual retirement pension (IRP) accounts regardless of risk asset investment limits.
Because foreign stocks are included, investing through a pension account defers taxation incurred during trading until the point of pension receipt. Investors may also receive low-rate taxation benefits if they later receive the funds as a pension.
"This is a product that directly captures the AI memory cycle through two companies focused on memory chips, while considering the burden of volatility with 50% treasury bonds," said Kum Jung-sup, head of the ETF Business Division at Hanwha Asset Management. "It will be highly useful for investors who found it difficult to increase their semiconductor investment weighting due to retirement pension risk asset limits."
