Lam Research

Semiconductor equipment maker Lam Research held a groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 26 for a new research facility at its R&D center in Tualatin, Oregon.
The ceremony was attended by Lam Research President and CEO Tim Archer, Executive Vice President and COO Sesha Varadarajan, U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read, and representatives from Intel and Micron.
The new facility will be located near major customers within Oregon's semiconductor industry cluster, known as the "Silicon Forest." The facility will span about 11,100 square meters and is scheduled to open in 2028. Once completed, it will expand cleanroom research space at Lam Research's Tualatin R&D center by more than 50%.
Lam Research is expanding its global network of research facilities, with the new Oregon lab representing the first project under the initiative. The company plans to invest more than $3 billion over the next five years to advance technologies needed to develop artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.
Leveraging its strengths in atomic-scale semiconductor manufacturing technologies, Lam Research plans to expand its expertise in advanced deposition and etch process development, materials science and hardware validation.
The Oregon facility will enable close collaboration with customers from initial product concepts through deployment in manufacturing facilities. It will also be connected to Lam Research's global research network and operate around the clock, 365 days a year.
Sesha Varadarajan, COO of Lam Research, said the next generation of semiconductors required in the AI era will depend on focusing innovation on technologies that matter most to customers. He said the new advanced Oregon lab will strengthen the company's expertise, add significant cleanroom capacity and enable closer collaboration with customers.
Naga Chandrasekaran, executive vice president of Intel Foundry, said Intel has worked closely with Lam Research around the world for decades. He added that the new research facility will allow the two companies to accelerate semiconductor process development, validate new technologies more quickly and jointly drive innovation in AI computing.
Manish Bhatia, president and COO of Micron, said AI is significantly increasing memory demand and creating a need for greater speed, scale and manufacturing capabilities. He said Micron plans to further strengthen its longstanding partnership with Lam Research as the equipment maker expands its manufacturing capabilities to meet AI demand.
