Hiring demand for forward deployed engineers (FDEs), who build artificial intelligence solutions at client sites, is surging as companies expand their adoption of AI.
Companies are moving quickly to secure FDE talent in order to apply AI to actual business operations, industry sources said on the 26th. According to Wanted Lab (376980), the number of companies that posted FDE job openings in the first nine months of this year rose 13.8-fold from a year earlier, while the number of FDE positions increased 14.5-fold.
FDEs are developers deployed to client sites to build and adapt AI solutions directly to a company's operations and data. The role was first introduced by Palantir, and global AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic have recently expanded similar teams. As corporate use of AI moves into the stage of applying the technology to real work, the role of FDEs is growing in South Korea as well.
To respond to the rising demand, Wanted Lab will hold the FDE Recruiting Carnival on Nov. 18 at Lotte World Tower in Jamsil, Seoul, bringing together companies hiring FDEs, current practitioners and developers seeking to change jobs. The event will feature an introduction to the FDE role and hiring market trends, followed by presentations from companies including MakinaRocks (477850), Sionic AI, VESSL AI and Xenon on the skills they require and their recruitment processes.
Wanted Lab also plans to run a training program to develop FDE talent. The company will launch the FDE Academy for developers who lack AI skills or experience at client sites. The program will cover the full work process, from defining problems using AI technology to implementation, deployment and validation, and will connect graduates to its hiring talent pool.
"FDE hiring is growing rapidly, but companies and developers still understand this role differently," said Lee Bok-ki, CEO of Wanted Lab. "Through this event and the FDE Academy, we will work together to define what kind of FDE companies need and ensure that enough qualified talent is supplied to the market."
