Kia (000270) is setting a string of records this year, driven by sport utility vehicles and hybrids.
The automaker said on the 2nd that it sold 83,793 vehicles in the U.S. in August, up 0.9% from a year earlier and the most for any single month since it entered the market.
The Sportage led with 18,723 units, followed by the K4 at 12,881 and the Telluride at 12,693. Sales of the Carnival rose 13.3% to 7,389 units and the Seltos jumped 65.3% to 9,214. Hybrid sales climbed 65.7% to 24,948 units.
Kia's U.S. sales for the first eight months reached 590,377 vehicles, up 3% from a year earlier and also a record. "The Telluride continues to post sales growth," said Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations at Kia America, adding that the launch of the all-electric EV3 will sustain that momentum through 2027.
Kia earlier reported global sales of 1,630,988 vehicles in the first half, its best-ever first-half performance and a 2.7% increase from 1,587,536 units a year earlier. The Sportage sold 303,203 units, the Seltos 177,148 and the Sorento 125,283. Domestic electric vehicle sales surged 151.1% to 72,078 units, also a first-half record. The gains helped Kia post quarterly revenue of 33.04 trillion won in the second quarter, its highest ever.
Kia has recorded year-on-year sales growth in every month this year except February. Global sales in August rose 5.0% to 266,675 vehicles.
