HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' (329180) Philippine unit (HHIP) has launched its first locally built vessel at the Subic shipyard, marking the full-scale operation of its production base in the Philippines.
According to the Philippine Department of Finance and the shipbuilding industry on the 29th, HHIP held a launching ceremony for the "Orion Jade" at the Subic shipyard the previous day. The ship is the first completed vessel among a total order of four, measuring 250 meters in length, 42 meters in width and 21 meters in depth. Full-scale ship construction began with a steel-cutting ceremony attended by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in September last year.
HD Hyundai's Philippine unit has created about 4,000 jobs in Subic Bay and neighboring areas, and employment is expected to double once the shipyard reaches full operation. Philippine Finance Secretary Frederick Go, who attended the launching ceremony, said, "The launch of the Orion Jade shows that the Philippine government's strategic efforts to attract investment are being realized into actual industrial facilities and quality jobs."
The Subic shipyard, established by Hanjin Heavy Industries (now HJ Heavy Industries) in 2006, halted production in 2019 due to corporate rehabilitation proceedings. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (009540), HD Hyundai's intermediate shipbuilding holding company, later revived the facility by building local construction infrastructure through a lease agreement for part of the site in 2024. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering chose Subic as one of its key bases to implement a "two-track strategy" of building high-value vessels at domestic shipyards and low- to mid-priced vessels in Southeast Asia, where costs are lower. In March, HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun visited the site, inspecting facilities including the dock and meeting with employees.
