  • Brunello Cucinelli

High-priced clothing stripped of brand markings is hardening into a spending standard among the wealthiest consumers. Proving a garment's price with a logo on the chest has been left to newly rich buyers and younger shoppers, while long-established wealth with larger assets has moved to a market that prices clothes on fabric and tailoring alone.
Japanese outlet President Online reported on the 29th, citing an assessment by luxury marketing specialist Riichiro Nishida, that luxury consumers have split into two groups and that the asset-holding class is shifting toward "quiet luxury."
Nishida pointed to the profit structure of luxury companies as the cause. His reasoning is that customers who repurchase in step with fashion cycles serve corporate earnings better than customers who use a product for years. "Universal designs that can be worn for decades are actually an obstacle [to corporate profits]," he said. "Intense designs and huge logos make it clear to anyone, after just six months, that the trend has passed." Logos, by his account, are the device that makes the fashion cycle visible.
Price tags bear this out. Logo T-shirts from Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga sell for more than 1 million won, and Dior and Gucci maintain logo product lines in a similar range. Judged by material alone, they are closer to cotton T-shirts or oversized sweatshirts. The one element driving up the price is the marking. Buyers are concentrated among influencers and the newly wealthy.
On the other side, price tags form without any marking. On Loro Piana's official Korean online store, a men's baby cashmere coat costs 14.43 million won and a shearling coat 22.87 million won. Brunello Cucinelli, The Row and Zegna fall into the same category. The plain T-shirts and polo shirts worn in public by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos are also made of top-grade fabric or custom-made, according to the industry.
Market indicators point the same way. By Shinsegae Department Store's tally, sales of quiet luxury brands grew 22% in 2024, far outpacing the 6.2% growth for luxury goods overall. Cumulative growth from Jan. 2 to Feb. 16, 2025, was 25%. Brunello Cucinelli's 2025 revenue rose 10.1% from a year earlier to more than 1.4 billion euros.
The overall market, by contrast, is contracting. According to Bain & Company's 2025 global luxury market study, the Chinese market shrank 3% to 5%, while Japan and Europe also slowed.
The number of luxury consumers worldwide was estimated to have fallen from 400 million in 2022 to around 340 million. As entry-level and mid-tier buyers, who rely more heavily on logos, drop out, only the logo-free high-end segment has held on to its growth rate.
The term spread on the back of the 2023 HBO drama "Succession." In its final season, members of a media dynasty wore only unmarked clothing, drawing attention, and actress Gwyneth Paltrow's courtroom wardrobe was read in the same light. Google searches for "old money style" climbed to 25,000 a month, more than seven times the 3,400 recorded a year earlier.
Criticism centers on identifiability. Large logos let anyone guess a price range, but unmarked luxury reveals its value only to those who can read material, cut and color. That is where the argument arises that class distinctions have become more covert.
"For people who have everything, other people's recognition and 'likes' on social media no longer matter," Nishida said. "Underlying this is a desire not to entrust one's identity and intellect to an external sign such as a brand logo."
Offshoot concepts have also emerged. "Gentle luxury" folds not only price but also the labor conditions of producers and sustainability into purchasing criteria. It amounts to paying for natural materials that last and for ethical production processes.
"Lazy luxury" refers to a trend of wearing top-grade materials without formality, covering product lines that apply the highest level of fabric and tailoring to silhouettes closer to loungewear, such as wide-leg silk pants.
