HMM (011200), South Korea's largest shipping company, will spend more than 2 trillion won to secure 12 additional container ships. The move comes as the company steps up efforts to expand its fleet and strengthen its shipping competitiveness, shortly after relocating its headquarters to Busan.
HMM said in a regulatory filing that its board approved the new facility investment for ordering newbuild container ships and purchasing secondhand vessels at a meeting on the 15th. The investment totals 2.1678 trillion won, or 8.16% of the company's equity capital. In dollar terms, the amount is about $1.617 billion.
Under the plan, HMM will order eight new 13,000-TEU container ships and buy four secondhand vessels, including three 2,800-TEU ships and one 1,700-TEU ship. One TEU refers to one 20-foot container. The 12 vessels have a combined capacity of 114,100 TEU. The company aims to broaden its fleet and improve operational competitiveness by securing both newbuilds and secondhand ships.
The investment period runs from the 15th through Dec. 31, 2029. The end date is based on the scheduled final delivery of the vessels, and the actual investment amount and timeline could change depending on revisions to vessel specifications and delivery schedules.
HMM began operations at a temporary headquarters in Bujeon-dong, Busanjin-gu, Busan, on the 12th. On the 13th, President Lee Jae-myung attended an unveiling ceremony at the Busan headquarters with HMM President Choi Won-hyuk and officials from the government and the Busan city government, lifting the cover from the HMM symbol sculpture moved from the company's Seoul building and encouraging employees. "We will work to become a global top-tier shipping company through aggressive investment based on our mid- to long-term strategy for 2030," Choi said that day.
The temporary office houses work space including the chief executive's office, and 120 employees are working there, including about 90 staff from the existing Busan sales division.
