Growth in the foldable smartphone market is driving higher shipments of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials at Duksan Neolux. Book-type models that unfold horizontally use 2.5 to three times more materials than conventional smartphones because they have OLED panels on both the inside and outside.
According to industry sources on Sept. 11, Duksan Neolux has seen steady growth in shipments of foldable-related materials, helped by new product launches and expansion of the market.
Duksan Neolux produces hole transport layer (HTL) materials, red-emitting layer hosts, Prime materials used as auxiliary layers for red, green and blue (RGB) emission, and capping layers (CPL). As panel makers increase foldable OLED production, orders for the organic materials used to form each layer also rise.
Book-type foldable smartphones have a large inner display and a separate outer display. Their combined screen area is about 2.5 to three times that of conventional bar-type smartphones. Flip-type models use about 1.3 to 1.5 times as much. Assuming production of 10 million book-type foldables, OLED material consumption would be equivalent to that for 25 million to 30 million conventional bar-type smartphones. In other words, replacing 10 million bar-type phones with book-type models would generate additional material demand equivalent to 15 million to 20 million bar-type phones.
Duksan Neolux is also expanding its foldable OLED product lineup with black pixel definition layer (PDL) material. PDL separates the light-emitting areas of red, green and blue pixels. Black PDL reduces external light reflection, allowing panel makers to eliminate the polarizer. Removing the polarizer reduces panel thickness and power consumption while increasing light transmittance. Foldable smartphones, which require thin and flexible panel structures, are driving demand for black PDL.
“Foldable panels require an additional black PDL to achieve a thin and flexible structure,” a Duksan Neolux official said.
Duksan Neolux expects to benefit from the foldable market in two ways. Larger OLED production area increases consumption of HTL, red hosts, Prime and CPL materials, while adoption of black PDL increases the number of products supplied for each panel. Even if the unit prices of emissive materials for foldables are not higher than those for conventional smartphones, greater sales volumes and a broader product mix could boost revenue.
Counterpoint Research expects global foldable smartphone shipments to rise 21% this year. It forecasts the share of book-type models to increase 24 percentage points to 76% from 52% last year. Growth in overall foldable shipments and the rising share of book-type models are expected to drive OLED material demand.
“When we supply materials for foldable panels, the number of products we deliver increases, while the larger screen area also raises material consumption,” the Duksan Neolux official said. “If demand for large-screen smartphones grows, sales of both panels and materials will increase.”
Duksan Neolux posted second-quarter revenue of 95 billion won and operating profit of 18 billion won, up 16.9% and 80%, respectively, from a year earlier. Its second-half results are increasingly likely to exceed those levels.
