Oil soars, Brent tops $100 a barrel after Houthis attack Saudi tankers in Red Sea
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Duke Energy announced today that it expects data center operations to generate billions of dollars in long-term customer savings through its Customer Protection Plus framework, according to a press release statement.
The utility company, which serves 8.7 million electric customers across six states, outlined a three-part approach for managing data center growth. The framework focuses on preserving grid reliability, managing growth through long-term agreements, and creating shared value when revenues from large customers exceed service costs.
Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) said data centers will sign long-term agreements that include customer-funded connection costs, upfront financial security, termination charges and temporary curtailment provisions. The company conducts engineering studies before connecting new data center customers to ensure the grid can maintain reliable service for existing customers.
"Data centers will provide billions of dollars in customer benefits," said Harry Sideris, president and CEO of Duke Energy. "Duke Energy remains laser-focused on ensuring data centers not only pay their fair share but also yield savings for our existing customers."
The company stated that revenues from new large-load customers that exceed service costs will support investments in grid infrastructure and energy resources. Duke Energy owns 55,700 megawatts of energy capacity and also operates natural gas utilities serving 1.6 million customers across four states.
Sasha Weintraub, executive vice president and chief customer officer at Duke Energy, said the company is working with customers, regulators and stakeholders to ensure projects create customer benefits while preparing the energy system for future growth.
The Charlotte-based Fortune 150 company did not provide specific details on the timeline for data center connections or the projected amount of customer savings.
