Stocks post weekly losses amid widening Iran conflict, AI worries, and tariffs
Investing.com -- SpaceX’s Starship rocket launched 20 upgraded Starlink satellites during its 13th test flight on Friday, marking progress towards routine operations despite another hard booster splashdown, Reuters reported.
The 400-foot rocket lifted off at about 6:50 p.m. ET from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas for a mission lasting roughly one hour.
Starship released the first batch of Starlink V3 satellites, which offer higher bandwidth and faster internet speeds than earlier versions. The satellites briefly connected with the company’s existing network of about 10,000 spacecraft.
The units were not intended to remain in orbit. They followed Starship’s suborbital path into Earth’s atmosphere and burned up as planned, allowing SpaceX to test deployment and connectivity systems.
Friday’s flight used a new version of Starship that is central to several company projects. These include expanding Starlink, supporting NASA’s planned human return to the moon by 2028 and eventually deploying AI-processing satellites in orbit.
The spacecraft completed atmospheric reentry with limited visible damage to its heat shield, improving on earlier tests. It then restarted its engines, flipped upright and splashed down in the Indian Ocean.
The manoeuvre simulated how future Starships could return to land in Texas. Chief Executive Elon Musk has said the fully reusable system should eventually operate with aircraft-like frequency.
Starship’s Super Heavy first-stage booster encountered problems during its descent. Five engines failed to restart as the booster attempted to slow itself, causing it to strike the Gulf of Mexico faster than planned.
A similar test in May ended with four engines failing to relight and another hard impact. SpaceX had targeted a softer splashdown during Friday’s mission.
The company plans to begin using Starship for operational Starlink deployments by the end of 2026.
The V3 satellites are expected to add enough network capacity for ordinary mobile phones to connect directly to satellites in areas without conventional cellular coverage.
