Oil prices tumble over 8% amid halt to fighting between U.S., Iran
ST. LOUIS - Ameren Missouri, a subsidiary of Ameren Corporation (NYSE:AEE), filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission to build a 2,100-megawatt combined-cycle natural gas facility called the West Alton Energy Center, according to a press release statement issued today.
The facility is designed to provide baseload power and is expected to be completed in 2031, pending regulatory approval. The project is anticipated to create more than 1,000 construction jobs over several years.
The application filed with the Missouri Public Service Commission outlines plans for the facility, which Ameren Missouri states will support grid reliability as the economy grows and other energy generation facilities reach the end of their useful lives.
"Customers count on reliable energy to keep their homes comfortable, care for their families, run their businesses and stay connected to the things that matter most," said Aaron Melda, chairman and president of Ameren Missouri. "The West Alton Energy Center is one way we’re preparing for Missouri’s future and supporting the growing needs of our communities."
The facility will be constructed adjacent to Ameren Missouri’s existing Sioux Energy Center, allowing the company to utilize existing equipment and connections. The company stated this approach is intended to maximize existing resources.
State law and the company’s Powering Missouri Growth Plan include provisions requiring data centers to cover infrastructure costs needed to serve them, according to the filing.
"Projects such as the West Alton Energy Center are designed to perform under a wide range of conditions and periods of high demand," said Ajay Arora, executive vice president and chief growth and generation development officer at Ameren Missouri.
The project is included in Ameren Missouri’s long-term energy planning process. The company’s financing approach references a 2024 analysis by the State of Missouri that found the method lowers project costs.
Ameren Missouri provides electric generation, transmission and distribution services, as well as natural gas distribution service to customers in Missouri.
