S. Korea’s KOSPI rebounds to close 6% in red; SK Hynix drops 10%
GOLETA, Calif. - Aeluma, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALMU) announced today that it has signed a letter of intent for up to $30 million in proposed funding under the CHIPS and Science Act, administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The funding would support research and development of the company’s semiconductor manufacturing platform for photonics. Aeluma manufactures photonic components including high-speed photodetectors and lasers using large-diameter substrates up to 300mm in size as an alternative to indium phosphide substrates.
"We are pleased to be one of the companies selected to receive an LOI for funding to support the AI and advanced computing ecosystem in the U.S.," said Jonathan Klamkin, Aeluma’s President and CEO, according to a press release statement.
The award is subject to completion of due diligence, required approvals including internal approvals of the U.S. Government, and execution of definitive award documents. The letter of intent contemplates a portion of the award being funded upfront with the remainder funded on a milestone-based structure tied to eligible project costs and technical progress.
In connection with executing final award documents, Aeluma would issue equity securities to the U.S. Department of Commerce with an aggregate value equal to the award amount. The company stated these securities would not be registered under the Securities Act of 1933 and would be issued pursuant to an applicable exemption.
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick stated that the compute supply chain investments would enhance domestic capabilities and create jobs. Bill Frauenhofer, Executive Director for Semiconductor Innovation and Investment at the Department of Commerce, said the CHIPS R&D incentives would support a breakthrough in manufacturing of photonic devices for compute and communication networks.
Aeluma operates facilities in Goleta, California, and partners with sites within the U.S. The company specializes in photonic and electronic technologies for applications including mobile, AI, defense and aerospace, robotics, automotive, AR/VR, and quantum.
