Wall Street slips as oil prices surge on sharp U.S.-Iran escalation
CAMARILLO, Calif. - Teledyne Space Imaging announced that NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying detector technologies supplied by the company.
The launch brings the total number of Teledyne scientific imaging sensors in space to more than 1,000, according to a press release statement from the company.
Teledyne received a $23 million contract from NASA in 2018 to provide 24 flight quality sensor chip assemblies for the Roman mission, later expanded to 28. The company supplied H4RG-10 infrared detector arrays for the mission’s Wide Field Instrument. Each detector contains more than 16 million pixels arranged in a 4096 × 4096 format. Together, 18 H4RG-10 detectors create a mosaic of more than 300 million pixels.
Teledyne also provided three CCD311-20 detectors for Roman’s Coronagraph Instrument, which combines coronagraph masks, deformable mirrors, and wavefront sensing systems to suppress starlight for direct observation of planetary systems.
The Roman Space Telescope is designed to survey billions of galaxies and observe distant stellar explosions to investigate dark energy and identify exoplanets beyond the solar system. The observatory has a field of view around 200 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope’s infrared observations.
"Reaching more than 1,000 scientific, space-qualified imaging sensors in orbit is a proud achievement for everyone at Teledyne," said Megan Tremer, President of Teledyne Space Imaging.
Teledyne’s imaging sensors support missions including the Hubble Space Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope, Euclid Space Telescope, ESA’s Sentinel missions, and NOAA’s and NASA’s GOES program. Teledyne Technologies (NYSE:TDY) operates primarily in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Western and Northern Europe.
