Wall Street ends lower amid surging oil prices, but notches gains for August
LEAWOOD, Kan. - AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:AMC) announced today the creation of Leawood Films, a film distribution company headquartered in Los Angeles and Leawood, Kansas, according to a press release statement.
The venture will distribute films that are fully financed by filmmakers or already completed, rather than financing productions or developing scripts. Leawood Films will focus primarily on small and medium-sized releases.
The company will be advised by Toby Emmerich, former Chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group; Ricky Strauss, former President of Marketing at The Walt Disney Studios; and Kyle Davies, former President of Domestic Distribution at Paramount Pictures. Craig Jacobson of Hansen Jacobson will represent the venture.
AMC will partner with Variance Films in North America and Piece of Magic Entertainment internationally for distribution expertise.
"Leawood Films is being created with a straightforward objective, given that substantial excess capacity exists in the movie theatre industry: to bring more movies to theatres," said Adam Aron, AMC Entertainment Chairman and CEO.
The initiative follows AMC’s theatrical distribution of concert films including Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé in 2023, and Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party of a Showgirl in 2025.
Leawood Films will respect a 45-day or greater premium video-on-demand window and a 90-day or more subscription video-on-demand window. The majority of downstream revenues and intellectual property ownership will remain with filmmakers.
AMC stated the venture is designed to complement rather than compete with its existing studio and distribution partnerships. The company has not yet selected its initial films, with first releases unlikely before 2027 or 2028.
AMC operates approximately 850 theatres and 9,500 screens globally.
