Oil prices edge lower after recent gains on renewed US-Iran tensions
OAKLAND, Calif. - PG&E Corporation (NYSE:PCG) announced Monday a strategic review of its business structure and financing options while planning to defer approximately $2 billion in capital spending for 2027, according to a press release statement.
The company’s Board of Directors established a Strategic Review Committee composed of four independent directors to evaluate regulatory, financial, operational and strategic alternatives. The review aims to determine how the utility can be organized and financed to serve California customers.
PG&E cited California’s wildfire liability framework as creating financing risks that increase costs and limit investment in the energy system. The company said it will seek input from California regulators, policymakers and stakeholders during the review process.
The utility plans to reduce its 2027 capital spending to approximately $11.4 billion from a previously planned higher amount, deferring $2 billion of work. The company said this reduction would lower debt financing needs by $2 billion while maintaining critical safety programs and compliance obligations, including its Wildfire Mitigation Plan.
"Over the last several years, PG&E has made meaningful progress improving safety, reliability and affordability for our customers. But California’s wildfire liability framework continues to create financing risks that drive higher costs," said CEO Patti Poppe.
The strategic review will examine options to create what the company described as a financially strong, investment-grade entity capable of attracting long-term investment. The company stated the review would honor existing labor agreements, pension commitments and claims obligations.
PG&E reaffirmed its full-year 2026 non-GAAP core earnings guidance of $1.64 to $1.66 per share and initiated 2027 guidance of $1.78 to $1.82 per share. The company plans to re-evaluate its long-term earnings growth rate and 2028-2030 capital investment outlooks following the strategic review.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company serves 16 million customers across a 70,000-square-mile service area in Northern and Central California.
