The 36-month disease-free survival rate was 86% for the combination therapy compared with 76% for chemotherapy alone.
The ATOMIC study enrolled 712 patients who were randomized to receive either modified FOLFOX6 plus Tecentriq for 12 cycles followed by Tecentriq monotherapy for 13 cycles, or modified FOLFOX6 alone for 12 cycles. The trial was sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and led by the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology.
Nearly 25% of all colon cancers are diagnosed at stage III, according to the press release statement. Approximately 30% of stage III patients experience disease recurrence within five years despite surgery and chemotherapy. About 15% of colon cancer patients present with deficient DNA mismatch repair or microsatellite instability-high tumors.
The safety profile in the study was consistent with previous studies of Tecentriq and modified FOLFOX6, the company stated.
