) announced Monday a modular rack-scale reference design called Orion that allows customers to select their own GPUs and CPUs for AI inference workloads.
The design supports up to 160 accelerators per pod and uses a PCIe switch fabric to connect compute resources. Astera Labs stated the architecture aims to help customers deploy AI infrastructure without committing to a single accelerator platform.
The Orion system includes reference designs for compute trays, fabric trays, memory trays, link boards, and compute boards. The designs will be manufactured and sold through the company’s original equipment manufacturer and original design manufacturer partners, according to the press release statement.
"Orion gives AI inference cloud providers a production-grade, compute-agnostic architecture so they can quickly bring inference capacity online, provide outcome-based pricing for their customers, and adapt as the industry and compute landscape evolves," said Pravin Patel, vice president and general manager of the AI Platform Solutions Group at Astera Labs.
The system integrates with Astera Labs’ COSMOS Rack Manager and COSMOS Fabric Manager software for management and diagnostics. The company stated the architecture is built on open standards and plans to extend support to additional interconnects, including UALink.
Orion rack reference and system designs are scheduled for availability through partners beginning in the first quarter of 2027. The company will display a powered Orion rack at the Open Compute Project Global Summit taking place October 12-15 in San Jose.
The target customers include neoclouds and enterprises building AI inference capacity. Astera Labs stated the design allows operators to deploy infrastructure and scale inference workloads across different compute resources via PCIe plug-in cards without redesigning racks.
