Wall Street kicks off key week of bank earnings and CPI data with a mixed session
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT) unveiled its Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization Center on Monday, a $5 billion facility designed for collaborative semiconductor research and development.
The 600,000-square-foot facility houses nearly four acres of cleanroom space at the company’s Sunnyvale campus. Applied Materials stated the center aims to accelerate development of chipmaking technologies by bringing together chipmakers, equipment partners and researchers in a single location.
Founding partners include TSMC, Intel, Samsung Electronics, Micron and SK hynix. Innovation partners Broadcom, Advantest, SCREEN, KIOXIA and Besi have also committed to the facility, along with research partners Arizona State University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Stanford University, UC Berkeley and UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.
The facility represents a shift from the traditional semiconductor R&D model, where materials research, equipment development and pilot production typically occur in separate locations. The EPIC Center consolidates these functions to enable parallel development of materials, equipment and process technology.
"As AI infrastructure scales, the demands of high-performance computing are driving unprecedented complexity across the chipmaking roadmap," said Gary Dickerson, President and CEO of Applied Materials.
The construction required more than six million hours to complete. Capital spending is expected to scale over time to approximately $5 billion as customer projects commence, according to the press release statement.
TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei said the partnership "fast-tracks the leap from R&D to high-volume manufacturing for the energy-efficient AI architectures of tomorrow."
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan stated the facility "gives our teams the opportunity to work side by side with Applied on materials and process innovation."
Applied Materials develops materials engineering solutions for the semiconductor industry. The company expects the facility to provide chipmakers with earlier access to next-generation materials and equipment while giving Applied visibility into emerging technology challenges.
