Oil prices dip as Trump waives Russia sanctions
COVINGTON, La. - Globalstar Inc. (NASDAQ:GSAT) received authorization from the Federal Communications Commission to operate its third-generation C-3 satellite system nationwide, according to a press release statement issued today.
The authorization permits Globalstar’s C-3 satellites to communicate with mobile earth terminals in the United States, including direct-to-device connectivity to smartphones. The approval also covers ground station antennas in Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.
The C-3 System will consist of 48 low Earth orbit satellites operating at an altitude of 1,414 kilometers, plus six in-orbit spares. Approximately 90 six-meter ground station antennas will be installed globally. The satellites are scheduled to begin launching next year.
The system, registered with the International Telecommunication Union by France under the name AST-NG-C-3, will be controlled from satellite operations centers in Toulouse, France and Globalstar’s headquarters in Covington, Louisiana. MDA Space in Canada will manufacture the satellites, while U.S.-manufactured ground station antennas will be installed in over 20 countries.
"Receiving this FCC authorization is a critical step forward for continuing to enhance the capabilities of our low Earth orbit satellite constellations," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, CEO of Globalstar.
L. Barbee Ponder, General Counsel and Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for Globalstar, said the company expressed appreciation to the FCC and the Space Bureau for their work on the multi-year licensing effort.
Globalstar provides telecommunications services through its low Earth orbit satellite constellation and licensed Band 53/n53 spectrum.
