NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) announced today that Mike Petters, the company’s former CEO and president, has been elected to its board of directors.
Petters served as HII’s first CEO and president from the company’s spin-off from Northrop Grumman in 2011 until stepping down in 2022. He began his career at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1987 in the Los Angeles-class submarine construction division and advanced through various positions to become president of the shipyard.
"Mike brings deep shipbuilding expertise to the Board, and a unique familiarity with the history, mission, and evolution of HII," said Chris Kastner, HII’s current CEO and president, according to a press release statement.
Petters holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the U.S. Naval Academy, earned in 1982, and an MBA from the College of William and Mary. He served aboard the nuclear-powered submarine USS George Bancroft and spent five years in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
Kirkland Donald, HII’s chairman of the board of directors, stated that the company aims to leverage Petters’ expertise as it expands capacity for U.S. Navy deliveries.
Petters has held leadership positions with the Virginia Business Council and the Aerospace Industries Association. He currently serves on the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation Board of Directors and the U.S. Naval Institute Board of Directors.
In 2016, Petters established HII’s Scholarship Fund, which provides educational support for employees’ children from pre-K through secondary education. The program has served over 1,900 students.
HII is headquartered in Virginia and employs 45,000 people across three divisions.
