S&P 500, Nasdaq open lower as AI trade faces renewed pressure, oil tops $110
HOUSTON - Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:HPE) announced today that its Spaceborne Computer-4 is planned to power artificial intelligence and high performance computing benchmarks on the Moon’s surface, according to a press release statement.
The system will deploy on Astrolab’s FLIP rover as part of a mission scheduled to launch in late 2026 through NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. Voyager Technologies’ Griffin-1 lander will transport the rover to the lunar South Pole region.
HPE Spaceborne Computer-4 is designed as a lightweight, fanless compute module equipped with a CPU and GPU. The system will test large language model retrieval-augmented generation, vision inference, and LiDAR data processing capabilities in the lunar environment.
"The next chapter of lunar exploration will depend on the ability to turn data into insights at the point of discovery," said Scott Wiest, vice president and global sales chief technologist at HPE.
The compute module utilizes flash memory storage from KIOXIA. HPE will support Astrolab’s mission control in Hawthorne, California, using HPE Private Cloud and CloudOps Software.
NASA will deploy its Federated Learning for Unbounded and Intelligent Decentralization experiment, running an AI neural net model trained on data from Earth, the Moon, and the International Space Station. The agency will also conduct a large language model test for searching and interpreting onboard documents.
Deloitte’s Silent Shield system will provide cyber-analytics and anomaly detection during the mission.
"Our FLIP rover is designed to accommodate a variety of payloads, and this mission will demonstrate how commercial lunar mobility platforms can support technology development and scientific research," said Jaret Matthews, founder and CEO of Astrolab.
HPE stated that based on publicly available information, no other organization has conducted the specific HPC benchmarks it plans to execute on the Moon’s surface.
