Investing.com -- Netflix issued current-quarter revenue guidance that missed consensus estimates, sending shares of the company down more than 4% in early U.S. trading.
The streaming giant has been struggling with user engagement and continued capital spending to sustain its vast portfolio of content. Shares of Netflix have fallen 0.4% since the company’s last quarterly report in July, and have lost more than 26% year-to-date, lagging behind a 12.7% rise in the benchmark S&P 500.
Netflix has also seen two high-profile executive departures in the span of a week, with Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria being replaced by former Fox and Disney media executive Peter Rice, and film division head Dan Lin leaving after nearly three years at the helm.
Last week, Netflix said it would eliminate about 1,000 jobs, or 6% of its global workforce, in its biggest round of layoffs since 2022.
To keep viewership elevated, Netflix has been broadening its programming mix beyond on-demand films and television, adding live events, sports, video podcasts and content from YouTube creators. It has also pursued bundling arrangements with other streaming services and secured the rights to broadcast the 2030 FIFA World Cup, in a bid to prop up the amount of time users spend on the platform.
In July, Netflix said it would reduce the frequency of its viewing-hours report, publishing the data annually instead of twice a year starting in January 2027. The firm stopped reporting quarterly subscriber numbers in 2025.
Goldman Sachs recently said third-party data on Netflix’s engagement metrics had been “quite mixed” this summer into fall. Citing Sensor Tower data, the brokerage had highlighted a 10% year-on-year decline in U.S. monthly active users in the third quarter, compared to a 1% decline in the rest of the world.
"We’ll continue to expand our entertainment offering through licensing and new ways to bring in more third-party content to our service, like our TF1 partnership in France. Our audience, which is approaching one billion people, and our best-in-class product capabilities, make us great partners for studios, networks and creative talent," Netflix said in a letter to shareholders.
The streaming firm earned $0.87 per share on revenue of $12.87 billion in the third quarter. Analysts had expected a profit of $0.82 per share and revenue of $12.87 billion.
For the fourth quarter, Netflix projected revenue of $13.4 billion, compared to Wall Street estimates of $13.51 billion. Netflix guided for annual revenue of $51.1 billion, versus $51 billion to $51.4 billion previously.
"While subscription revenue growth has outperformed our expectations, we currently expect 2026 ad revenue of ~$2.7 billion [versus] approximately $3 billion previously (due to slightly slower than expected rollout of some ad product capabilities)," Netflix said.
