SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - BETA Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:BETA) announced Monday that the Federal Aviation Administration has granted its ALIA VTOL (A250) aircraft a Special Airworthiness Certificate for market surveys, the first such authorization for an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
The certification, issued under Part 21 of FAA regulations, allows BETA to conduct flight operations with operators and stakeholders. The A250 completed its first authorized flight on Sunday, traveling 34 nautical miles from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York to Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport in Vermont in 20 minutes.
The A250 is designed to operate from locations with or without runway access and features dual pilot controls. The aircraft can carry up to five passengers and more than 1,200 pounds of cargo, according to the company’s press release statement.
BETA previously received market survey authorization for its conventional takeoff and landing aircraft. The company stated that both aircraft have flown more than 250,000 nautical miles combined.
"Operators can now experience the VTOL firsthand and begin planning how it fits into their businesses, from connecting communities to moving people and goods at a lower cost," said Kyle Clark, founder and chief executive officer of BETA.
The VTOL shares core technology with BETA’s ALIA CTOL aircraft, including propulsion systems, flight control computers, batteries and charging systems.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy stated the certification represents "another critical step towards enabling the future of flight in America."
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency is "committed to working with American innovators to safely integrate these new aircraft into our national airspace."
The authorization expands the geographic scope of BETA’s operations, subject to applicable FAA limitations. The company continues working toward full type certification and commercial operations.
