Investing.com -- QuantumScape reported a smaller-than-expected loss for the third quarter, sending shares up about 8% in premarket trading Thursday as the solid-state battery developer also announced plans for its first commercial-scale production line.
The company posted a loss of $0.14 per share for the third quarter, beating the analyst consensus estimate of a loss of $0.17 per share. The quarterly loss narrowed from a loss of $0.18 per share in the same period last year.
The company’s third-quarter loss totaled $85.6 million, compared with a loss of $105.2 million in the year-ago period.
Operating expenses declined to $92.4 million from $115 million YoY, contributing to the narrower loss. The company reported $9.8 million in customer billings during the quarter, including both automotive and non-automotive customers.
QuantumScape also announced it is partnering with Muehlbauer Group to build a 100 megawatt-hour capacity cell production line, with production expected to begin in 2028.
The new production line represents the first commercial-scale mass production of QuantumScape’s battery cells. Muehlbauer will provide cell assembly equipment and production design improvements for the facility.
