Tesla slips as group sets lower annual sales goal amid SpaceX merger talk
Investing.com -- On Thursday, PulteGroup Inc. (NYSE:PHM) reported third quarter results that fell short of Wall Street expectations.
Shares of the homebuilder slid 8.24% following the announcement.
The company posted earnings of $2.53 per share on revenue of $3.9 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Both figures missed analyst estimates of $2.65 per share and $4.16 billion, respectively. Revenue declined 9% YoY from $4.2 billion in the prior year period, driven by a 9% decrease in home closings to 6,876 units and a 1% decline in average selling price to $561,000.
The company cited challenging market conditions as homebuying demand faced pressure from rising mortgage rates, widespread inflation, and global unrest. Home sale gross margin contracted to 24.8% from 26.2% in the prior year quarter, including 70 basis points of land impairments.
"The rapid increase in interest rates has stretched affordability even further, made selling an existing home even harder, and has pushed even more consumers to the sidelines," said CEO Ryan Marshall. "Within this environment, we continue to appropriately balance the price and pace of home sales, align production accordingly, and remain disciplined in our allocation of capital."
Net new orders totaled 6,208 homes valued at $3.5 billion, down 6% from 6,638 homes in the prior year quarter. The company’s backlog stood at 10,298 homes worth $6.4 billion at quarter end, up 4% and 3% respectively from the prior year.
PulteGroup repurchased $350 million of common shares during the quarter and ended with $1.4 billion in cash and a debt-to-capital ratio of 12%.
