Investing.com -- HSBC’s Hong Kong-listed (HK:0005) shares tumbled to a nearly 6-month low on Tuesday after quarterly results missed analyst estimates, overshadowing a fresh share-buyback plan from Europe’s largest bank.
The stock fell 5.56% to HK$134.30, after touching an intraday low of HK$132.60, its lowest level since April 2. The decline underperformed the broader Hang Seng Index, which was down 0.73% in afternoon trading.
The bank’s London-listed shares (LON:HSBA) slumped nearly 7%. Standard Chartered shares also fell more than 1% on read-across from HSBC results.

HSBC said it plans to launch an additional share buyback of up to $1 billion after reporting higher third-quarter profit, supported by stronger net interest income and lower credit impairment charges. The bank expects to complete the buyback by the announcement of its full-year 2026 results.
Pretax profit rose 32% year on year to $9.63 billion in the July-September quarter from $7.30 billion a year earlier, but fell short of Bloomberg estimates of $9.7 billion.
The bank’s annualised return on average tangible equity (RoTE) improved to 17.7% from 12.3% a year earlier, while its cost-efficiency ratio narrowed to 47.4% from 56.6%. Net interest margin remained stable at 1.57%, while its common equity tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio fell to 13.9% from 14.1% at the end of June.
Revenue increased 5% year on year to $18.62 billion, primarily reflecting growth in banking net interest income. However, the figure fell short of analyst estimates of $19 billion.
Net interest income rose 6% to $9.31 billion, supported by deposit growth and reinvestment of the bank’s structural hedge at higher yields.
Credit impairment charges declined 17% to $832 million, primarily reflecting lower charges related to Hong Kong commercial real estate exposures, alongside reduced charges in the UK and Mexico. Profit after tax climbed 38% to $7.57 billion.
HSBC maintained its target for RoTE of 17% or better in 2026, 2027 and 2028, excluding notable items. It also reiterated its expectation for 2026 banking net interest income of at least $46 billion and operating expense growth of approximately 1% on a target basis.
The bank’s board approved a third interim dividend of $0.10 per ordinary share, alongside the planned buyback.
