LightCounting reports on highlights from IPEC’s webinar on Near-Packaged Optics (NPO), held on May 7th, 2026.
This webinar focused on the evolution of optical interconnects for AI and scale-up networks, with particular emphasis on NPO technologies. Six presenters from Alibaba, Ciena, Coherent, Huawei, Ranovus and Tencent shared updates on their NPO developments, highlighting technical specifications, standardization efforts, and deployment timelines. Key discussions centered around the advantages of NPO and Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) for high-density interconnection, the trade-offs between modularity and integration, and the importance of open standards versus proprietary solutions. The presenters also addressed challenges including supply chain considerations, technical readiness, and the need for industry collaboration to advance NPO/CPO.
According to the latest Market Forecast report from LightCounting shipments of high-speed (400G and above) optical transceivers exceeded 60 million units in 2025 and these will reach close to 100 million in 2026. Most of these modules are deployed in scale-out networks of AI clusters. Huawei and Nvidia also demonstrated use of pluggable transceivers for scale-up interconnects, where bandwidth requirements per GPU are 9x higher compared to scale-out networks. It is this order of magnitude increase in bandwidth density that will require alternative designs of optical interconnects such as NPO and CPO.
Qin Chen of Alibaba and Sidong Fu of Tencent agreed that the core reason for the shift from pluggable modules to NPO/CPO is the demand for bandwidth density in scale-up networks. Lower power consumption and improved reliability are other important benefits of NPO/CPO. Transmission of high-speed electrical signals from a GPU or switch ASIC to front-panel pluggable modules dissipates a lot power, referred to as “insertion loss”.
Experts from Alibaba and Tencent also believe that CPO is the most optimal solution in terms of performance. However, they are concerned about the lack of an open ecosystem supporting CPO-based solutions. In contrast, NPO can rely on a well-developed ecosystem of pluggable optical transceivers, while offering significant improvements in bandwidth density and power consumption. NPO is the most practical and cost-effective solution for large-scale deployment today.
Hojjat Salemi of Ranovus summarized the advantages of NPO in a chart, shown in the figure below. He also mentioned that Ranovus is shipping NPO modules to several cloud companies in the US, but public announcements of these deployments will probably have to wait until OFC 2027.
Alibaba presented its technical roadmap for NPO development: currently, 3.2T NPO has entered the testing phase (Beta version), and the company plans to start pilot deployments in the third quarter of 2026. Regarding 6.4T NPO, Alibaba expects to complete the Alpha sample development and system-level debugging by September 2027.
