Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf said the bank's recent progress should not be viewed as a turnaround story, arguing the lender remained fundamentally strong even while operating under regulatory restrictions.
"I wouldn't call it a turnaround story," Scharf said in an interview with Bloomberg, adding that Wells Fargo "always had a great franchise" but needed to address internal issues that had led to years of regulatory scrutiny.
Throughout that period, the bank continued serving customers, making loans, and taking deposits despite constraints on balance sheet growth, he said.
Scharf said Wells Fargo used the period under the Federal Reserve's asset cap to improve efficiency, expand fee-generating businesses, and strengthen its corporate and investment bank, credit card operations, and treasury services. With the cap lifted, the bank can now grow its balance sheet and better serve customers, he said.
He pointed to the bank's latest quarterly results, including a 25% increase in earnings per share, double-digit revenue growth, and revenue gains across all business segments, saying Wells Fargo is "certainly in a different place" and aims to become the country's leading financial services provider.
Scharf attributed the bank's performance primarily to the strength of its franchise and employees, while acknowledging that favorable market conditions have also benefited lenders.
"The markets do help," he said, noting that banks should be performing well in the current environment. He added that Wells Fargo remains focused on expanding consumer checking accounts, commercial banking relationships, and lending while maintaining disciplined risk-taking.
On investment banking, Scharf said Wells Fargo would continue its measured expansion, building on existing corporate lending relationships by adding advisory, underwriting, and treasury capabilities.
"We've been on a disciplined path to growth," he said, adding that the bank expects to continue hiring as it pursues its ambition of becoming a top-five investment bank.
