Earnings Call Insights: Pegasystems (PEGA) Q2 2026
Alan Trefler framed the quarter around what he called a market reset in AI economics, saying, "what was once available for free or for all-you-can-eat licensing is priced now by token use with the attendant anxiety and ambiguity." He added that this shift is stretching enterprise buying behavior: "Decision cycles have lengthened as clients seek greater clarity around technology strategies, AI priorities and the reality of highly variable token costs."
Trefler positioned Pega’s PegaWorld announcements as a response to that uncertainty: "At PegaWorld, we unveiled the solution, offering our clients access to AI agents with no per token costs." He also described the product direction as AI-heavy at design time with more deterministic execution at scale, saying, "Use AI extensively at design time... But once you get them right, run them repeatedly at scale... only using the AI selectively in the runtime steps where it makes sense."
Trefler highlighted new product releases and distribution plans, saying, "With the release of Pega Infinity last week, we took a significant step forward with the introduction of Infinity Studio." He added, "Infinity Studio will make it easier for our clients to build and extend their workflows... we'll be rolling it out aggressively through the rest of the year."
Kenneth Stillwell said the first half faced three headwinds, including renewal seasonality, buyer uncertainty, and execution: "we didn't execute well enough on our go-to-market change." He said the company is adjusting activity mix, including "strengthening our focus on new logo acquisition" and using "Blueprint... powered by the combination of Blueprint and the newly released Infinity Studio in Pega 26," while adding, "Our progress in the first half was slower than we anticipated, but we remain very confident this is the right approach."
Stillwell emphasized ACV as the core momentum metric and reported, "Pega Cloud ACV increased by $165 million... growing 22%" and "total ACV grew 7%" year-over-year. He also highlighted cash generation, saying, "We generated $288 million of free cash flow in the first half 2026," and capital return, adding, "we repurchased 9 million shares for over $360 million" and "total common shares were reduced by 6 million shares in the first half of 2026."
Stillwell said the company will not follow a quarterly “reguiding” cadence: "We provide annual guidance at the beginning of the year. We do not issue quarterly guidance or typically update our outlook during the year." He added, "Given our back-end loaded renewal portfolio and our slower-than-expected start... we definitely have our work cut out for us in the second half."
Stillwell described the company’s original annual cadence assumptions and the recovery challenge: "when we model our full year net new ACV add for 2026, we assumed 1/3... in the first half... and 2/3... in the second half," and then cautioned, "We will work hard to recover as much of that first half shortfall as possible, but it will be very difficult."
On longer-term objectives, Stillwell reiterated, "we expect to generate $700 million plus of free cash flow in 2028" and said, "Slower ACV growth in the first half of '26 does not change that objective, but it will require us to reevaluate certain investment priorities."
Stillwell reported mix and growth dynamics in ACV, saying, "Pega Cloud remains the fastest-growing and most important component of our subscription model," while noting moderation: "growth moderated to 27% at the end of last quarter in constant currency." He also stated, "now that Pega Cloud ACV is 57% of total ACV," the company expects "continued pressure on maintenance and subscription license growth rates as clients migrate to Pega Cloud."
Stillwell described the company’s capital allocation posture as opportunistic and tied to market disruption, saying, "we intend to deploy a substantial amount of our free cash flow toward opportunistic share repurchases," and added, "Share repurchases remain a very attractive use of capital" amid what he called "a disruptive market."
Stillwell clarified AI monetization, saying, "Pega does not charge per token," and added, "our AI monetization strategy is based on the business value that clients create on our platform" through "case-based pricing" and "case price uplift for advanced AI-powered runtime capabilities, including innovations such as Agentic Process Fabric."
Steven Enders, Citi: asked whether delayed deals are "starting to close" and what that implies for the back half; Founder, CEO & Chairman Alan Trefler replied, "we are seeing movement," but cautioned, "in the summer, the third quarters are lousy times for a turnaround," adding, "they will be unlocking in the second half. how quickly it will happen, that's candidly part of this great uncertainty."
Steven Enders, Citi: asked how investment plans may change to support long-term free cash flow; Trefler said, "we are committed" to being "a Rule of 40 cash flow generating company" and added, "We will temper our investments"; COO & CFO Kenneth Stillwell said, "we need to always be looking at opportunities to rightsize the amount of investment spend" and added, "I would not say that any part of our financials are best-in-class and cannot be improved."
Raimo Lenschow, Barclays: asked how much of the weakness is controllable (go-to-market) vs. market token dynamics; Stillwell said, "we underestimated some of the ways that we needed to really manage that change internally" and added, "a lot of this is in our control."
Raimo Lenschow, Barclays: asked why not adjust guidance after a tougher first half; Stillwell replied, "We stay away from the pattern... trying to reguide and guide and reguide quarters," and added, "guiding -- reguiding to a number in an uncertain environment, I don't think is super helpful for anybody."
Devin Au, KeyBanc: asked to quantify slipped deals and whether they are concentrated by vertical/geo; Stillwell said, "a lot of those pipeline deals in Q2 just didn't close... They elongated," adding, "We're not seeing that" deals "just go away."
Devin Au, KeyBanc: asked about confidence in "$575 million" free cash flow for 2026; Stillwell said, "any ACV shortfall puts pressure on our ability to hit that $575 million" and added, "There are decisions that we make around spending... given the first half performance."
Patrick Walravens, Citizens JMP: asked what changed so quickly within Q2; Trefler said, "everybody is trying to reevaluate things when you think of just all the noise that hit" and added, "I think... a lot of that hit really in Q2."
Mark Schappel, Loop Capital: asked why delay is temporary vs. durable; Stillwell said, "I don't know that I would say I have complete clarity" but cited, "our pipeline is growing nicely" and "our late-stage pipeline is up -- is very strong over last year," adding, "I don't think anybody in the market can guarantee" the duration.
Patrick McIlwee, William Blair: asked whether Infinity Studio could mirror Blueprint’s cycle-time impact; Trefler replied, "bringing the Blueprint AI capabilities into Infinity Studio is a really, really big deal," adding, "I think it's going to completely change it much in the same way the Blueprint did."
Analysts’ tone was slightly negative to skeptical, pressing on elongating demand and guidance discipline, including Mark Schappel’s question on whether delays are "temporary" or "a more durable shift" and Devin Au’s question on confidence in the "$575 million" free cash flow outlook.
Management tone was slightly positive in long-term conviction but cautious near-term, with Stillwell saying, "we definitely have our work cut out for us in the second half" and acknowledging, "Our progress in the first half was slower than we anticipated," while also stating, "we remain very confident this is the right approach."
Versus Q1, management’s prepared remarks maintained the same core message on AI cost governance and outcome-based pricing, but Q2 carried more explicit execution accountability ("we didn't execute well enough") and more direct uncertainty language ("great uncertainty") in responses.
In Q2, Stillwell explicitly cited three causes of the first-half slowdown—renewal timing, buyer uncertainty, and go-to-market execution—whereas Q1 positioned seasonality and external disruptions as expected headwinds, including that the business "was expected to return to a more typical seasonal pattern" and that Q1 had "a challenging comparison."
Q2 sharpened the market narrative from Q1’s broad AI confusion to specific economic friction around tokens, with Trefler in Q2 emphasizing "token consumption is opaque until the bill arrives" and positioning "no per token costs" as a differentiator.
In Q2, analyst questioning more directly challenged the durability of demand and the company’s willingness to adjust outlook, while management reinforced the approach of not updating guidance intra-year and emphasized cost discipline tied to Rule of 40 execution.
Stillwell described near-term demand risk as buyer hesitation, saying, "The resulting uncertainty made customers more cautious and contributed to a more confused and longer buying cycle," and added, "it remains difficult for us to assess the magnitude or duration of potential IT spending reallocations."
Management flagged execution risk explicitly, with Stillwell saying, "we didn't execute well enough on our go-to-market change," and mitigation centered on higher prospecting, executive engagement, more new-logo focus, and using Blueprint plus Infinity Studio to improve "pipeline quality, conversion and sales productivity over time."
Cash flow delivery risk was linked to ACV variability, with Stillwell stating, "any ACV shortfall puts pressure on our ability to hit that $575 million" free cash flow outlook for 2026.
Pegasystems’ management described Q2 as a period of AI-driven buyer confusion and longer decision cycles, while positioning Pega’s design-time AI approach, predictable workflow execution, and "no per token costs" for AI agents as key differentiators. The company reported slower-than-expected first-half execution alongside $288 million of first-half free cash flow and substantial buybacks, and reiterated a $700 million-plus free cash flow objective for 2028 while emphasizing that recovering the first-half ACV shortfall in the back half of 2026 will be "very difficult" and may require reprioritizing investments.
