Hedge fund manager John Paulson said Wednesday he believes gold is in the early stages of a long-term rally.
"We're in the beginnings or the early stages of a long-term bull market for gold," Paulson said on CNBC's The Exchange. "As people lose faith in paper currencies, gold as an alternative will continue to grow."
Demand for bullion continues to broaden, led by central banks that have been adding to their reserves alongside growing private sector interest.
"Gold is becoming the most apt reserve currency in the world, replacing fiat currencies," Paulson said. "The demand from central banks, for instance, has continued to grow, as has the private sector."
The billionaire investor also said investors stand to benefit more from owning gold miners than bullion itself, particularly companies with large undeveloped reserves.
Paulson's comments came as NovaGold Resources (NG), where he serves as co-chairman, said it would acquire Paulson Advisers’ 40% stake in the Donlin Gold project in Alaska.
Gold futures rallied for a second straight day of dip-buying Wednesday, supported by a softer U.S. dollar and technical buying as investors closely watched developments in the Middle East.
"Gold exploded higher, punching above $4,140 as a weaker dollar and dip buyers injected fresh inspiration into bulls," FXTM senior research analyst Lukman Otunuga said in a note, although "the underlying bearish fundamentals may cap upside gains, especially with oil prices up."
High oil prices due to Middle East supply disruptions have weighed on gold prices as they raised expectations of higher-for-longer interest rates, which tend to diminish the appeal of non-yielding gold.
This week's rebound "appears driven more by fresh buying interest following a period of consolidation rather than a material shift in the geopolitical or macroeconomic backdrop," ING analysts wrote. "While tensions in the Middle East remain supportive for precious metals, markets are weighing softer U.S. economic data against the inflationary risks from higher energy costs."
Front-month Comex gold (XAUUSD:CUR) for July delivery jumped 1.8%, its strongest gain since June 15, to $4,146.90/oz, and front-month Comex July silver (XAGUSD:CUR) climbed 2% to $60.019/oz for its fourth consecutive daily gain.
