Airbus (EADSF) has provided a timeline for its next narrow-body aircraft, while Boeing (BA) believes it needs more time to get its finances in order before rolling out a new jet. But their customers are more concerned about getting their deliveries on time.
Existing narrowbody planes from Boeing (BA) and Airbus (EADSF) continue to be the most used aircraft, according to the International Air Transport Association. Boeing 737s operated 10.8M flights in 2025, up 12% Y/Y, followed by Airbus A320 with 8.7M flights and A321 with 4.2M flights.
"We are preparing the successor of the A320, which we call eAction, with a view of launching the program in 2030," Airbus (EADSF) CEO Guillaume Faury told Aviation Week in June. "Launch in 2030, entry into service in the second half of the next decade."
On the other hand, Boeing (BA) will need "a couple more years" to get its "financial house in order" before working on a new commercial jet, its CEO Kelly Ortberg told CNBC this week.
"The market's got to be ready," he added. "Right now, the customers are telling me, 'focus on your existing product line, we really want to see better maturity of the existing product line before we move to a new airplane.'"
For years, the aircraft industry has been plagued with supply chain constraints and production challenges. As a result, aircraft deliveries have persistently been delayed.
But many airlines need to renew their fleets, and the limited availability of delivery slots was seen as a key driver for orders at this week's Farnborough Airshow.
"Many carriers are reaching a point where fleet replacement decisions can no longer be deferred, yet the delivery positions available to them extend well into the next decade," Stuart Hatcher, chief economist at aviation intelligence firm IBA, noted.
Aircraft makers secured over 300 firm orders – led by Boeing (BA) – as of Wednesday, the penultimate day of the Farnborough Airshow. This is well below IBA's estimate of more than 800 orders.
"With meaningful new delivery positions several years away, production increases, supply-chain recovery and the ability to convert backlog into deliveries remain the real measures of progress," said Dan Taylor, head of consulting, IBA.
Airline executives raised the issue of delivery delays at the airshow. British Airways CEO Sean Doyle said the carrier was still awaiting delivery of Boeing's (BA) 777X jet, which was originally scheduled for 2022.
Emirates President Tim Clark said he expects Boeing (BA) 777-9 aircraft to be delivered next year. "We should have had them in April 2020... so if we get them in Q2 of 2027, that's a bit of a stretch under any circumstances."
"I'm not keen to see a new narrow body in a 2030 time frame," Paul Kent, chief commercial officer at aircraft lessor BOC Aviation, said at the airshow.
