Zions Bancorporation (ZION) stock fell 2.9% in Thursday premarket trading after Evercore ISI downgraded the bank to Underperform from In Line as analyst John Pancari expects rate hikes won't benefit the bank as much as its stock valuation implies.
"We expect mounting funding pressures to limit the degree of NII (net interest income) upside as rate hikes take hold," the analyst wrote in a note to clients. "More importantly, this view has contributed to our below-consensus earnings forecasts and flies in the face of recent solid share outperformance amid a clear rate hike trade."
In the past six months, Zions (ZION) stock rose 15%, outpacing the S&P 500's 8.5% increase and the KBW Nasdaq Bank Index's (BKX) 13% rise.
Pancari pointed to management's comments that deposit competition is intensifying as is pressure on non-interest-bearing deposit growth. He sees these pressures persisting and posing a risk to Zions' (ZION) NII upside.
Evercore also lowered its price target on Zions to $68 from $74.
The Underperform rating on Zions (ZION) contrasts with the SA Quant rating of Hold and the average Wall Street rating of Buy.
