Bank of America Securities downgraded Rollins (ROL) to Underperform from Buy on Thursday, arguing that the pest-control company's weaker-than-expected second-quarter results have reduced confidence in a near-term recovery in residential demand.
Analyst Curtis Nagle cut his price target on Rollins (ROL) to $35 from $55, implying roughly 19% downside from Wednesday's closing price of $43.47. The new target also reflects a lower valuation multiple, as the analyst said weaker demand visibility no longer justifies the premium investors have historically assigned to the stock.
The downgrade follows Rollins' (ROL) quarterly earnings report, which missed Wall Street's adjusted earnings expectations and sent the shares down about 10% in after-hours trading on Wednesday.
For investors, the key concern is that management's explanation for slowing growth has shifted from temporary weather disruptions to softer consumer demand. That raises the possibility that the slowdown could prove more persistent, particularly because Rollins' (ROL) Orkin brand has significant exposure to consumer-generated leads.
Nagle said residential organic growth of 3.6% fell well short of both his 4.5% estimate and the Street consensus of 5.4%. Organic residential growth is now running about 200 basis points below its five-year average, reducing confidence that the business will soon reaccelerate.
The analyst said weaker lead generation through digital search channels, combined with more volatile consumer behavior and competitive pressures, hurt demand during May and early June. While management said lead generation improved in July and commercial trends remained stable, Nagle said additional evidence is needed before concluding the business has reached an inflection point.
"Visibility takes a step back," he wrote, adding that the investment narrative has moved beyond weather-related disruptions toward broader concerns about demand in consumer-initiated sales channels.
Commercial and ancillary businesses remained relatively healthy, posting organic growth of 7% and 9%, respectively, but that strength was not enough to offset residential weakness.
The softer demand environment also weighed on profitability. Nagle noted that second-quarter operating margins came in around 22%, below the roughly 23% expected by Wall Street. First-half incremental margins were just 8%, well below the company's long-term target range of 25% to 30%.
Bank of America now expects Rollins (ROL) to generate 6.2% organic growth and 12% incremental margins, down from prior forecasts of 7% and 21%, respectively. The firm also reduced its revenue and earnings estimates through 2028, lowering its 2026 adjusted earnings forecast to $1.17 a share from $1.23, with similar reductions for subsequent years.
Nagle also lowered the valuation multiple used in his price target calculation to 28 times expected 2027 earnings from 40 times previously. Although Rollins (ROL) has historically commanded a premium valuation because of its consistent organic growth, consolidation opportunities and resilient industry fundamentals, he said those strengths are now overshadowed by uncertainty surrounding near-term residential demand.
"Given much lower visibility on near-term demand trends, we see limited avenues for rerating," Nagle wrote.
