Brent crude oil reached $100/bbl for the first time in two months after Iran-backed Houthi militants claimed attacks on two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, threatening deeper oil supply disruptions and sparking fears that the U.S.-Iran conflict could escalate further.
Front-month Brent crude (CL1:COM) for September delivery soared 6.6% to $100.36/bbl, and front-month Nymex September crude (CO1:COM) jumped 5.4% to $91.53/bbl, adding on to four consecutive daily gains for both benchmarks.
The Houthis said they attacked two Saudi tankers attempting to transit the Bab al-Mandeb strait that connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean—although the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations confirmed one of the attacks—after the U.S. completed the 12th straight day of strikes against targets in Iran on Wednesday.
The Houthi attacks open a new front in the conflict, as targeting the Red Sea imperils the critical detour route the Saudis have used to keep oil barrels flowing during the disruption that largely closed off traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
When the Bab al-Mandeb Strait is shut, vessels can still reach customers in Asia, but only after taking a massive detour through the Suez Canal and around Africa, adding 10-15 days to the journey, according to ship tracker Kpler.
When fully loaded, the biggest tankers sit too deep in the water to pass through the Suez Canal, so shippers would need to operate supertankers on partial loads.
The longer and less efficient journeys will tie up more tanker capacity and push up shipping costs for Asian refiners.
The latest developments in the Middle East come as exports from major producer Kazakhstan are endangered by the Russia-Ukraine war, and the world's oil inventories are depleted.
Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported the U.S. is sending more forces, medics, and weaponry to the Middle East to provide military options as President Trump considers expanding the war.
