American Express (AXP) is set to report its second-quarter earnings on July 24 before the market opens, with investors closely watching whether the strong business momentum seen in the first quarter will continue into the second quarter.
Wall Street expects the company to post non-GAAP EPS of 4.41 on revenue of 19.70B, with analyst estimates trending higher after 15 upward EPS revisions and 20 upward revenue revisions over the past three months.
The biggest focus will be card spending. In the first quarter, American Express delivered 11% revenue growth (10% FX-adjusted), 18% EPS growth, and card member spending growth accelerated to 10% (9% FX-adjusted), marking its fastest quarterly growth in three years.
Management also reaffirmed its full-year guidance for 9%-10% revenue growth and EPS of 17.30-17.90, while increasing investments in marketing and technology.
Along with spending, investors will be watching whether higher customer activity continued to offset rising expenses and credit costs. In the first quarter, provisions for credit losses increased to $1.3B, making credit quality another key area to watch in the upcoming results.
Analyst sentiment has also become more constructive. Passage Research recently upgraded the stock to Buy with a $422 price target, saying strong consumer spending, improving credit trends, and lower delinquencies suggest the company is well positioned for the second quarter.
Overall, both Seeking Alpha analysts and Wall Street rate the stock 'Buy,' while the Quant rating stands at 'Hold.'
Despite the positive outlook, some risks remain. SA analysts Joseph Parrish said delays in the CLARITY Act could slow industry adoption, while competition from USDC (USDT-USDC) could reduce future benefits if American Express has to partner with Circle (CRCL-USD).
American Express shares are down 7.80% so far this year, underperforming the S&P 500's 9.55% gain. However, the stock is still up 10.95% over the past year.
