Boeing Co. (BA) finished slightly ahead of Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY) in aircraft orders announced during this week's Farnborough Airshow, though the event reflected an industry increasingly focused on boosting production rather than chasing splashy sales announcements.
For investors, the modest order activity underscored that demand for new aircraft remains strong, but the industry's biggest challenge has shifted to manufacturing enough jets to reduce massive order backlogs. Supply chain constraints, labor shortages and engine production issues continue to limit deliveries across the sector.
Boeing (BA) announced firm and tentative orders for 173 aircraft during the show, compared with 154 for Airbus (EADSF)(EADSY), according to a Reuters tally. Excluding deals that had already been recorded in manufacturers' order books without naming customers, the total fell to 218 aircraft.
The overall order count was slightly higher than at the 2024 Farnborough Airshow but far below the more than 1,100 aircraft announced at the event's 2018 peak.
The week's largest commercial transaction came from aircraft lessor SMBC Aviation, which split a 200-plane order evenly between Boeing's 737 Max and Airbus' A320neo family, highlighting continued demand for single-aisle jets despite lengthy delivery wait times.
Other notable deals included additional widebody aircraft purchases by Riyadh Air, Philippine Airlines and leasing company AerCap, while Embraer (EMBJ) secured orders for 50 regional aircraft, including 20 freighters.
Rather than emphasizing sales, both Boeing and Airbus used the airshow to highlight efforts to overcome production bottlenecks that have left their order books stretching well into the next decade.
Boeing did not display any of its major commercial aircraft, with several models still undergoing certification, while Airbus showcased its A350-1000 as it evaluates potential upgrades to compete with Boeing's delayed 777X.
Engine manufacturers also attracted attention. CFM International (GE)(SAFRF)(SAFRY) announced an order for more than 1,000 LEAP-1A engines to power 500 previously ordered Airbus aircraft, while both CFM and Pratt & Whitney (RTX) said supply conditions are gradually improving after years of shortages that disrupted aircraft production and maintenance.
