TotalEnergies (TTE) up 1.7% in Thursday's trading after reporting Q2 profit that jumped 67%, its best earnings quarter since Q4 2023, helped by higher oil prices and margins for refining fuels due to supply disruptions from the U.S.-Iran war.
The company said continued high prices enabled it to cut its net debt by $3.3B to just shy of $20B, maintain its $1.5B quarterly stock buyback program, and declare a second interim dividend of €0.90/share.
Q2 adjusted net income rose to $6B, in line with expectations in a consensus of analysts polled by LSEG, compared with $3.6B in the year-earlier quarter and $5.4B in Q1 2026.
TotalEnergies' (TTE) E&P earnings jumped 64% Y/Y and 25% Q/Q to $3.2B, and income from refining and chemicals, which includes oil trading, soared 362% Y/Y to $1.8B, while the LNG division earned $807M, a 22% drop the company attributed to trading underperformance amid flat demand in Europe.
CEO Patrick Pouyanne said TotalEnergies' (TTE) upstream and downstream segments were both benefiting from the war, and its refineries, mostly in Europe, have maximized diesel and jet fuel production, which are earning the best premiums given low inventories across the continent.
The company's SATORP refinery in Saudi Arabia should return to full capacity by the end of Q3 after sustaining damage from Iranian attacks, the CEO said.
TotalEnergies (TTE">TTE) earns ~$400M annually from selling LNG cargoes from Russia's Yamal LNG plant, which fluctuates because the contracts are linked to Brent oil prices, Pouyanne said during the company's earnings conference call.
The company maintained its holdings in Russian LNG plants even after 2022 invasion of Ukraine but deconsolidated the holdings, which means the money no longer appears in official reporting.
