Equinor (EQNR) and its partners have made an oil discovery near the Johan Castberg field in the Barents Sea that they are considering developing through existing infrastructure, Norway's upstream regulator said Thursday.
Preliminary estimates indicated the size of the discovery, made in the Skrugard North Tubaen prospect by drilling a wildcat well 7220/5-EC-2 H, is 1.2M-1.7M scm of recoverable boe, which corresponds to 7.6M-10.5M boe, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate said.
The well, drilled by Transocean's (RIG) Transocean Enabler semi-submersible rig, was located 6 km north of the 7220/8-1 discovery of 2011 in Johan Castberg and 240 km northwest of Hammerfest.
The licensees are considering whether it may be possible to tie the field back to the Johan Castberg field, the regulator said.
The production license is held by operator Equinor (EQNR), which holds a 46.3% stake, with partners Var Energi (VARRY) owning 30% and Petoro the remaining 23.7% interest.
Equinor (EQNR) shares trade 3.3% higher Thursday, its second consecutive strong gain after reporting a sharp increase in Q2 profit.
