Royal Caribbean (RCL) plans to develop a community center in Mahahual, Quintana Roo, Mexico, as the cruise operator continues pursuing approval for a private destination on the Yucatan Peninsula.
This past May, the Mexican government rejected Royal Caribbean’s (RCL) bid to build a 222-acre waterpark in the small coastal town, citing environmental damage to the Mesoamerican Reef.
"We must not do anything that affects that area, which has a very important ecological balance and is particularly important for the reefs," Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said, leading Mexico’s Secretary of Environmental and Natural Resources, Alicia Barcena, to shut down the project.
Although the company said it would respect the decision by the government, it would not abandon plans to build another private destination.
"Mahahual is an important community for Royal Caribbean, and the Mahahual K'iin Community Center reflects the long-term partnership we want to continue building here," said Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. "This next phase is about turning commitment into action by creating a welcoming place where children can learn, families can gather, and neighbors can connect."
Sure. But Perfect Day would be a “game changer” for Royal Caribbean, says BNP Paribas analyst Xian Siew, as it would unlock the Texas market with short itineraries and boost prices on itineraries that include Perfect Day.
“If Perfect Day Mexico is back in play, this would be a positive catalyst for the stock as we think the market is discounting this possibility,” Siew adds.
The Perfect Day waterpark would be next to Royal Caribbean’s owned cruise port of Costa Maya.
