Teck Resources (TECK) up 3.7% in Thursday's trading after reporting Q2 profit tripled from a year ago on the back of higher copper prices, while reaffirming full-year production guidance.
Q2 adjusted EBITDA surged to C$2.19B (~US$1.6B) from C$722M in the year-earlier quarter, while revenue rose 78% Y/Y to C$3.61B, as benchmark three-month copper prices on the London Metals Exchange jumped 41% Y/Y, powered by concerns over tight supplies and strong demand in China.
Teck (TECK) said its realized copper prices averaged $6.05/lb in Q2, up from $4.32/lb in the prior-year period, and production climbed 24.6% to 135.9K tons.
Copper production at the Quebrada Blanca mine in Chile totaled 55.8K tons, slightly higher than both Q1 and the year-ago quarter, the company said, maintaining full-year output guidance for the mine at 200K-235K tons.
Overall, the company maintained full-year guidance for copper production of 455K-530K metric tons and zinc production of 410K-460K tons, which would deliver refined zinc of 190K-230K tons.
"Operationally, we continue to increase momentum across the business," Teck (TECK) President and CEO Jonathan Price said on the company's earnings conference call, noting that Quebrada Blanca achieved a third consecutive quarter of stable operating performance.
Teck (TECK), which is in the process of merging with Anglo American (AAUKF) (NGLOY), said the merger approval process with Chinese regulators is progressing normally and that it has not received any requests for remedies from authorities in China.
Teck (TECK) also said it is continuing to evaluate a broad range of potential feedstock sources for germanium processing as it works to expand its capabilities in the mineral; the company is North America's largest germanium producer.
