Rheinmetall (RNMBF)(RNMBY) said Thursday it begun construction of one of Europe's largest propellant powder plants, expanding ammunition production capacity in Germany as European countries accelerate defense spending.
The new facility will be built at the Aschau am Inn site in Bavaria, home to Rheinmetall subsidiary Nitrochemie Aschau. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with full capacity expected in 2028.
The expansion comes as European governments seek to replenish weapons stockpiles depleted by military aid to Ukraine following Russia's invasion. NATO members have also increased defense budgets after President Donald Trump renewed pressure on freeloading European allies to shoulder a larger share of the alliance's defense spending, fueling demand for ammunition and the industrial capacity needed to produce it.
Rheinmetall (RNMBF)(RNMBY) said it will invest several hundred million euros in the project. The company expects the site to expand from 90 hectares to about 110 hectares and create several hundred additional jobs, increasing total employment to about 1,400.
The Aschau facility currently produces about 1,700 metric tons of propellant powder and 300,000 propellant charge modules each year. Over the next 24 months, Rheinmetall said production will more than double, adding about 2,500 metric tons of powder, more than 5 million combustible components and more than 1 million modular propellant charge modules annually.
Propellant powder is a critical component of artillery ammunition and other large-caliber weapons. It generates the gas pressure that propels a projectile from a gun barrel.
The project forms part of Rheinmetall's Firepower initiative, which aims to expand ammunition manufacturing capacity across Europe. By 2030, the company plans to increase annual propellant powder production to 20,000 metric tons, with about 4,200 metric tons expected to come from the Aschau site.
Rheinmetall said it plans to invest about €650 million in propellant powder production and related precursor materials, including about €350 million at Aschau. The expansion also includes production facilities in Switzerland and Spain.
The company said the Aschau site will manage the full production chain for modular propellant charges, from raw materials through finished components.
