C.H. Robinson (CHRW) down 2% pre-market Friday after disclosing it could face as much as $604M in compensatory damages after a Texas jury issued an advisory verdict in a lawsuit tied to a trucking accident involving a contracted motor carrier.
The company said damages could be assessed against it, although the advisory verdict is subject to post-trial proceedings before the court enters a final verdict; it disagrees with the verdict and expects to appeal if the jury's verdict is final.
Three people were killed in the Mississippi crash alongside numerous injuries to other automobile passengers in a pileup that occurred after a Lupus Superior truck driven by its employee plowed into several cars; C.H. Robinson (CHRW) had hired Lupus Superior to move products.
The jury was not swayed by C.H. Robinson's (CHRW) defense that Lupus Superior had a satisfactory grade from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration before and after the fatal crash.
