Merck (MRK) on Friday announced seven licensing agreements with generic drug manufacturers, including Viatris (VTRS), to broaden access to its experimental HIV pill, alimatravir, in low- and middle-income countries.
Three companies from sub-Saharan Africa, including Aspen Pharmacare Holdings (APNHF) (APNHY), and four from India, including Viatris (VTRS), reached the royalty-free agreements, the New Jersey-based pharma giant said.
The non-exclusive and voluntary deals cover both public and private sectors in 129 countries that account for a majority number of new HIV cases, setting up early manufacturing capabilities to provide timely access to alimatravir following its approval, the company added.
The agreements come at a time when enrollments are underway for Phase 3 trials designed to evaluate the once-monthly oral pill for the prevention of HIV-1 as part of pre-exposure prophylaxis.
Merck (MRK) made the announcement ahead of the 26th International AIDS Conference taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, later this month.
