U.S. credit card delinquencies modestly increased in June, while charge-offs dropped across major banks, according to Seeking Alpha's latest edition of Credit Pulse.
Seeking Alpha tracks delinquency and charge-off numbers for seven banks in its monthly roundup: American Express (AXP), Synchrony Financial (SYF), Citigroup (C), Bread Financial (BFH), Capital One (COF), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), and Bank of America (BAC).
Average delinquency rate was up to 2.48% in June from 2.47% in May, below the three-month average of 2.50%. The June 2026 rate was well below the year-ago level of 2.67% and the pre-pandemic June 2019 average of 2.68%.
Average net charge-off rate came in at 3.42%, below the prior-month level of 3.63% and the three-month moving average of 3.58%. The pre-pandemic rate was 3.59%, and the June 2025 rate was 3.85%.
U.S. consumer confidence rose less than expected in June, according to data released by The Conference Board.
"Consumer appraisals of current business conditions were slightly more positive compared to last month. However, perceptions of the current labor market softened measurably as the percentage of consumers saying jobs were 'hard to get' rose to 22.5%, the highest level since January 2021 (22.8%)," said Dana Peterson, chief economist at The Conference Board.
"As they have throughout the post-pandemic expansion, consumers are grumbling about the state of the economy in surveys, then turning around to spend openhandedly," said Bill Adams, chief U.S. economist at Fifth Third Commercial Bank.
"It stands repeating: consumer spending continues to propel the economy," said Adams.
