Earnings Call Insights: Comfort Systems USA (FIX) Q2 2026
CEO Brian Lane said, "We had a fantastic quarter with amazing execution by our teams" and highlighted that "this is the first time that our quarterly revenue has exceeded $3 billion," while noting "bookings continued to trend upwards" and "our backlog increased to a new high of $14.1 billion." He added, "Demand remains strong, especially in Technology" and said the company "increased our quarterly dividend by $0.10 to $0.90 per share."
Lane said the company closed the Hunt Electric acquisition that was referenced last quarter: "I want to welcome our newest acquisition, Hunt Electric... that closed on May 1" and added, "we expect Hunt will contribute about $250 million of annualized revenue."
CFO William George said, "Our results were once again extraordinary" and reported "44% same-store revenue growth" alongside "approximately $1 billion in free cash flow," adding that the company ended the quarter "in a net cash position of over $1.8 billion."
President Trent McKenna said bookings strength was concentrated in data-center-related activity: "Second quarter bookings were especially strong in the Technology sector, both in our Construction business as well as Modular offerings," and described the backlog setup entering the back half: "we are entering the second half of 2026 with a backlog that is 69% higher on a same-store basis than we had at this time last year."
Management did not provide quarterly revenue or EPS guidance in the prepared remarks or Q&A; the company’s explicit forward-looking commentary centered on full-year same-store revenue growth, modular capacity expansion timelines, and capital spending expectations.
George raised the company’s full-year same-store growth view versus last quarter’s call, saying, "we estimate that 2026 same-store revenue growth will likely finish with a full year increase that is in the mid- to high 30% range," compared with Q1 commentary that "same-store revenue for the full year 2026 is likely to be higher than 2025 revenue by percentage growth in the mid to high 20% range."
On margins, George reiterated an expectation of continuity: "We believe that gross profit margins are likely to continue in the strong ranges that we have averaged in recent quarters."
On investment cadence, George said, "We estimate that full year CapEx expenditures will be approximately 5% of our revenue," while McKenna said modular capacity expansion remains commitment-driven: "we're not going to invest in buildings just on speculation. We expand when customers provide us meaningful multiyear commitments."
George reported Q2 2026 revenue of $3.3 billion and net income of $442 million, and said earnings were $12.53 per share.
Profitability expanded year over year, with George reporting gross profit of $844 million and gross margin of 25.9%, plus operating income of $558 million with operating margin of 17.1%; he also stated EBITDA was $600 million.
Cash generation and balance sheet were central call themes: George reported free cash flow of $999 million for the quarter, said trailing 12-month EBITDA is "approximately $2 billion," and added, "we are in a net cash position of over $1.8 billion" despite acquisition and capital spending.
Adam Thalhimer, Thompson, Davis: asked how to interpret "about $1 billion of free cash flow in a single quarter" and capital deployment; CFO George said there was "definitely an element of advanced cash" and "extraordinarily good payment terms," and on uses of cash added, "We like our stock better than we've ever liked it" while maintaining "a patient commitment to acquisitions."
Adam Bubes, Goldman Sachs: asked about modular capacity expansion and favorable project estimate revisions; CFO George tied capex to "the 5% of revenue that we talk about" and President McKenna said, "We expand when customers provide us meaningful multiyear commitments"; on estimate revisions, George said gains have "been just trending bigger" and referenced Q1’s disclosure: "we identified $43 million of gains that were kind of even outside the scope of the ordinary gains."
Sangita Jain, KeyBanc: pressed on NIMBY/pushback risk for data centers and whether modular expansion is for existing customers; CFO George said, "we see no let down whatsoever," while McKenna answered on capacity allocation, "For current customers" and confirmed, "Yes."
Julio Romero, Sidoti: questioned the embedded growth cadence and integration progress of Hunt Electric; management said guidance is "built from the bottom up" and George cited "really, really heavy comparables" ahead; McKenna said Hunt is "already working on some pursuits with our mechanical contractors in that market."
Joshua Chan, UBS: asked how much of backlog growth was modular and backlog duration; CFO George said, "Modular had bookings of $510 million" and added, "most of it burns on the Construction side in the next 18 to 24 months" while also noting modular is "getting farther and farther booked out."
Brian Brophy, Stifel: asked about returns on elevated capex, the drivers of advanced cash, and modular competition; CFO George said paybacks have been "within a year or 2" and on competition stated customers are seeking alternatives "because they want more than we'll build," adding, "We just want to be the best and keep a lead."
Jean Veliz, Oppenheimer: asked about the increase in billings in excess, modular capacity allocation, and service in data centers; CFO George said the capacity being discussed is "overwhelmingly for existing customers and existing orders," and McKenna said data center service is "not an immediate opportunity, but it's definitely a long-term opportunity" and added, "we're being very judicious in how we approach it."
Timothy Mulrooney, William Blair: asked about booking backlog ahead of new modular space and the risk of data-center moratoriums; McKenna said, "Some of that was in this quarter" and that customers provide "volume commitments," and added on moratorium noise, "these data centers as many as can be built are going to get built."
Analysts’ tone was slightly negative to neutral on concentration and permitting risk, repeatedly testing durability of data center demand and constraints, including "public sentiment turning against data centers," "moratoriums," and "bans" framing.
Management’s tone was positive and confident, repeatedly emphasizing continued demand and disciplined execution, including George’s "we see no let down whatsoever" and Lane’s closing that "Demand is strong, and our people are rising to the challenge."
Versus last quarter’s tone, this call featured more direct questioning around opposition/moratorium risk, while management’s posture remained consistent, with similar emphasis on supply constraints, customer commitments, and disciplined project selection.
Guidance language shifted materially on same-store revenue growth: Q1 framed 2026 same-store growth "in the mid to high 20% range," while Q2 raised that expectation to "the mid- to high 30% range."
Strategic emphasis remained centered on technology/data center demand and modular scaling, but Q2 expanded detail on modular capacity timing ("more than 4 million square feet in production by year-end" and "approximately 5 million square feet of capacity by late summer 2027") and on the closed electrical acquisition (Hunt Electric) that had been described in Q1 as an expected early-May closing.
Analysts’ focus broadened from labor/capacity constraints and backlog cadence (Q1) to include a heavier regulatory/community-pushback thread (Q2), while management continued to highlight prudence in taking work and the role of multiyear commitments in capacity decisions.
Data center opposition and permitting/power constraints were raised repeatedly; management’s responses emphasized customer visibility and continued build intent, with George citing hyperscaler certainty and McKenna suggesting projects may shift locations rather than disappear.
Labor remained an implied capacity constraint through repeated references to planning and commitments, with Lane stating, "we only take work that we know we can perform" and "We do a lot of time labor planning."
Modular expansion execution risk was addressed through management’s commitment framework; McKenna said expansions occur only with "meaningful multiyear commitments" and that the current buildout is "overwhelmingly for existing customers and existing orders."
Management described Q2 as a record quarter with $3.3 billion in revenue, $12.53 in EPS, record $14.1 billion backlog, and $999 million of free cash flow, while raising its 2026 same-store revenue growth view to the mid- to high 30% range. Leadership tied ongoing modular expansion and roughly 5% of revenue in capex to multiyear customer commitments, argued there is "no sign of a let down" in hyperscaler demand despite heightened analyst focus on moratoriums and NIMBY risk, and positioned the company’s net cash balance and capital allocation flexibility around continued investment, acquisitions like Hunt Electric, dividends, and potential share repurchases.
